Boeing annoucned last month that it has completed it’s Advanced Tactical Laser (ATL) system. The 12,000 lbs. module will be mounted on a C-130 military plane. This “Laser Gunship”, will produce, “a speed-of-light, precision engagement capability that will dramatically reduce collateral damage,” said boeing exec Scott Fancher.

Boeing plans to demonstrate this Star Wars like weapon for the U.S. Air Force sometime in 2008. The ATL is a Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL), which means it will use large amounts of hazmat fuels and produce equal amounts of toxic crap every time it gets fired. Boeings says however, they have this problem covered. The ATL’s COIL is “closed -cycle”, keeping it’s deadly exhaust products contained.
